Labrador Harnesses & Collars

Our great-great-grandparents hauled nets for the fishermen of Newfoundland, so us Labradors were built to work hard, swim in anything and carry whatever you'll let us. These days our main jobs are greeting you like you've been gone for years and keeping a very close eye on the kitchen. We...

What size does a Labrador need?

Here is what each size usually looks like on a Labrador. Labs range from leaner field types to broad, stocky show types, so go by the tape measure rather than their weight: measure the neck and the widest part of the chest. If they are between sizes, go up. Every other breed is on our size guide by breed.

Puppies usually start in an M harness, move into an L from around 6 to 10 months, then fill out into an XL. Smaller adults can stay in the L. For strong pullers, the Adventure strap harness in an L is the one. Collars are sized on the neck and harnesses on the neck and chest, so plenty of Labs take a different size in each.

How to Measure Your Labrador

  • Use a soft measuring tape for the most accurate results.
  • Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Labs are deep through the chest, so keep the tape snug and level.
  • Measure around the base of the neck where the collar would sit.
  • Large-breed puppies grow fast, so re-check the fit every few weeks until they are fully grown.

Why a Labrador should walk on a harness

A strong, excited Lab can hit the end of the lead with a lot of force, and on a collar all of that lands on their neck. A harness spreads the pressure across the chest and gives you far more control while they are learning lead manners, which, for a dog who cannot walk past water or a dropped chip, can take a little while.

Ours is step-in, so there is no wrestling a wriggly Lab through a loop every morning. You lay it flat, they step in, and the neck and chest clip closed. Both adjust, so it sits snug on a deep Labrador chest and stays put mid-walk. For the really strong pullers, our Adventure strap harness is made for stronger, broader dogs, with a front ring as well as the back one for extra steering.

On the step-in harness the lead clips at the back, so nothing pulls on the neck, and the collar is for their tag and their name. Dry everything off after a swim, which with a Lab is most walks.

Labrador Questions

Should a Labrador wear a harness or a collar?

Walk them on a harness. A strong Lab can hit the end of the lead hard, and on a collar all of that force lands on their neck. Keep the collar for their ID tag and engraved charm, and clip the lead to the harness.

What size harness does a Labrador need?

Most fully grown Labradors wear a size XL in our step-in harness, and smaller adults can stay in an L. Labs vary from lean field types to broad show types, so measure the neck and the widest part of the chest and check them against the size chart.

What size harness does a Labrador puppy need?

An M to start, moving into an L from around 6 to 10 months, then an XL once they have filled out. Large-breed puppies grow fast, so re-check the fit every few weeks.

What size collar does a Labrador need?

In our City vegan leather collar and our Suburban and Adventure strap collars, puppies usually wear an M and most fully grown Labs wear an L. Measure around the base of the neck and allow room for two fingers.

What is the best harness for a Labrador that pulls?

Our Adventure strap harness in a size L. It is made for stronger, broader dogs and has a front ring as well as the back one, so clipping the lead to the front turns a puller back towards you. For puppies, stick with the step-in harness.

Is a Labrador the same size as a Labradoodle?

Usually a size bigger. Most fully grown Labs wear an XL, while most Labradoodles wear an M and bigger boys an L. Got a Labradoodle in the family too? Shop our Labradoodle harnesses and collars.

My Labrador is between two sizes. Which should I order?

Go up. Labs are deep through the chest and keep filling out, and there is adjustment at both the neck and the chest to take in a slightly larger size. Our 30 Day Fit Guarantee means you can exchange it if the fit is not right.
