What size does a dachshund need?

Mini or standard, here is what each size usually looks like. A dachshund's chest often puts them a size above what their weight suggests, so measure the neck and the widest part of the chest. If they are between sizes, go up. Every other breed is on our size guide by breed.

Mini puppies usually stay in an XS until around 6 to 9 months, standard puppies in an S until around 7 to 9 months. Collars are sized on the neck and harnesses on the neck and chest, so plenty of dachshunds take a different size in each.

How to Measure Your Dachshund

Use a soft measuring tape for the most accurate results.
Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, behind the front legs.
Measure around the base of the neck where the collar would sit.
If between sizes, we recommend sizing up for comfort.

Why a step-in harness suits a dachshund

Dachshunds are built differently to most dogs, and it shows the moment you clip on a lead. That long back and those short legs mean the way the pull is carried matters, which is why most dachshund owners walk on a harness. It spreads the load across the chest and shoulders instead of the neck.

Fit is fussier too. A deep chest and a narrow waist mean plenty of harnesses gape at the shoulder or ride back into the ribs. Ours is step-in: you lay it flat, they step in, and the neck and chest clip closed. No wrestling anything over those ears. Both adjust, so it sits where it should and stays there mid-walk.

For walking, put the lead on the harness. It clips at the back, so nothing pulls on the neck. The collar is for their tag and their name.

Should my dachshund wear a harness or a collar?

Most dachshund owners use both, with the lead on the harness. The harness carries the pull across the chest and shoulders rather than at the neck, and the collar carries their ID tag and engraved charm for everyday wear.

What size harness does a mini dachshund need?

A size S once they are fully grown and under 6kg, or an M if they are over 6kg. Mini puppies wear an XS until around 6 to 9 months. Measure the chest to be sure, because a dachshund's build often puts them a size above what their weight suggests.

What size harness does a standard dachshund need?

Usually an M once fully grown, or an L if they are over 10kg. Standard puppies start in an S until around 7 to 9 months. Standards vary a lot, so measure the neck and the widest part of the chest and check them against the size chart on the product page.

What size collar does a dachshund need?

Most mini dachshunds wear a size S in our City vegan leather collar. In the Suburban and Adventure strap collars, mini puppies start in an XS and move into an S once fully grown.

Standards vary a lot through the neck, so measure around the base of the neck, allow room for two fingers and match it to the size chart. Or send us the measurement and we will confirm the size for you.

Will a step-in harness restrict my dachshund's shoulders?

It should not. The step-in sits behind the shoulder rather than across it, and both the neck and the chest adjust so you can fine-tune the fit. If it is riding forward onto the shoulder, that is usually a size or an adjustment issue rather than the design.

Where does the lead clip on?

On our step-in harness the lead clips at the back, so nothing pulls at the neck. The Adventure strap harness has a back ring too, plus a front ring if you want more steering with a dachshund who pulls.

My dachshund is between two sizes. Which should I order?
