Why a Chihuahua should walk on a harness
It comes down to that tiny windpipe. Toy breeds like Chihuahuas are prone to tracheal collapse, where the rings of cartilage in the windpipe weaken and flatten, and pressure on the neck can make it worse. A collar that tightens every time they square up to a dog ten times their size puts all of that on a very delicate throat. A harness spreads it across the chest instead.
Ours is step-in, which matters on a dog with ears this big and eyes this prominent. You lay it flat, they step in, and the neck and chest clip closed, so nothing gets squeezed over their head. Most Chihuahuas wear our XS, the smallest size we make, and both the neck and the chest adjust for a snug fit on a little frame.
For walking, put the lead on the harness. It clips at the back, so nothing pulls on the neck, and the collar is for their tag and their name. And if your Chi is shivering on a winter walk, it is probably not drama (this time).
